A strict carrier might cap the carry-on at 7 to 10 kg (15 to 22 lb). If yours weighs 4 kg (8.8 lb) empty, you've got 3 to 6 kg left for everything you carry.

So the bigger, tougher bag can be the one that gets gate-checked.

Size the bag to the strictest airline on the routes you actually fly. A roomy US domestic allowance is no help on a European low-cost hop. International and low-cost carriers often publish smaller numbers, so check the figure for the airline you fly most.

And weigh the bag empty before you judge it on features, because every kilo it weighs empty is a kilo you can't pack.

Wheels help most when the load is heavy, the walks are long, or a bad shoulder makes carrying the bag a chore: the kind of trip where a strap starts digging in halfway down a long concourse and you catch yourself swapping sides.

But wheels aren't free. They cost you three things before you pack a shirt:

• A kilo or two on the empty bag, straight out of your weight allowance.
• Space inside, which the wheels and the handle take up.
• Two of the parts most likely to fail: the wheels themselves and the telescoping handle.

So before you buy a wheeled bag for the way it looks, weigh it empty and check that against the limit of the strictest carrier you fly.

Each material has a real advantage and a real cost.

Leather doesn't necessarily last longer than a good nylon bag. What it does is age instead of tearing: a scuffed corner darkens into a patina where a hardshell would crack or scuff white.

That patina is an advantage in how the bag looks and feels, but it says nothing about how long the bag lasts.

Leather costs you something too. Full-grain leather is heavier than nylon or polycarbonate, and it isn't waterproof, so after a soaking you wipe it down and let it dry rather than scrubbing it.

• Leave it some room. Pack the bag tight around the suit and it folds into the very crease you were avoiding, because the suit only curves gently if there's slack around it.

Can you get your laptop out without unpacking?
