Buying Guide
Full-grain leather travel bags for men and women, carried without a logo. Weekenders, garment bags, wheeled carry-ons, convertibles and backpacks, all sized to clear the overhead bin. The only initials on them are the ones you choose.
A travel bag tends to go one of two ways. It either carries a logo across the front, or it is corporate nylon that wears out and looks like everyone else's. We set out to make the third kind: full-grain leather with no plate and no wordmark, built to be carried for years and to look better the more you carry it.
The Von Baer range covers the trips you take, from a soft weekender or wheeled carry-on for a night away to a garment bag that keeps a suit ready to wear. Every main bag is sized to carry on, so your bag and your laptop stay in the cabin with you at the gate.
New to the idea? Our piece on what quiet luxury actually means unpacks it.
Von Baer Quiet Luxury Bags. For Understated Travel.
Von Baer Quiet Luxury Bags earn the name in the parts a loud logo usually distracts from: the grade of the leather, the hardware that has to hold on an overpacked bag and whose name sits on the outside. We made the quiet call on each of those.
- The only name on your bag is your own. There is no logo plate, no metal nameplate and no printed wordmark on any of these bags. The one mark on it is yours to choose: up to four initials, blind-embossed by hand on the leather luggage tag that comes with the bag, included with the order. You put your initials on it and we keep ours off. In a conservative meeting it looks like something chosen with care, and in a crowded terminal it draws no second look. See more in our quiet-luxury bags for men, and the women's line.
- Leather that ages into character with every trip. Every bag here is full-grain leather, the top grade, where the surface is the hide's own grain, left as it is, with no sanding or coating on top. A scuff on it settles into a patina, so a mark from a trip becomes part of the bag's character over the years. Bonded and corrected-grain leathers do the opposite. So does the printed coated canvas many logo bags use: it cracks and peels at the stitched edges rather than settling into a patina.
- Sized to carry on and built for the overhead bin. Every main bag here is carry-on compliant, so it stays in your hand at the gate, laptop and all, with no risk of a gate-check. We choose signature hardware to hold up where lesser bags give out first, at the zips and the fittings on a bag you have overpacked. Where a bag stands on the floor, protective metal feet keep the leather off dirty terminal floors. And we reinforce them at the points that take the strain, so full leather does not have to mean dead weight down a long concourse.
- One honest price, with a 5-year warranty behind it. We set our prices once and hold them all year. What you see is what the bag costs, so you are never paying an inflated figure today that drops later. The price includes duties and taxes too, so a bag sent across a border does not become a customs bill at the door. Every bag is backed by a 5-Year Limited Warranty against faults in materials or workmanship.

Von Baer Travel Bags. Perfect Quiet Luxury Aesthetic.
Which Von Baer bag suits you comes down to how you travel. Whether you roll it or carry it, whether a suit comes along, whether one bag has to do several jobs at once.
If you fly often and would rather roll your bag through the terminal than carry it, the wheeled Voyager carry-on is the one to reach for. It is the only leather bag here on wheels: four spinner wheels and a two-stage telescoping handle, a padded compartment for a 16-inch laptop and a carry-on size that stays with you at the gate. Full leather usually sits on your shoulder, and this is the bag that takes that weight off you.
For a night or two away with nothing to roll, the Weekender is the classic shape. It is a soft full-grain duffle you carry by hand or on the removable shoulder strap, with a padded 16-inch laptop sleeve inside and protective metal feet underneath, so it stands on a hotel floor without scuffing.
When a suit or a tailored jacket has to arrive ready to wear, the Grand garment bag is built around that one job. It opens out flat, and a hanger clips inside a dedicated garment holder so the suit hangs rather than folds. Zip it back up and it carries like a weekender, with the suit curving gently around the inside so no hard crease is pressed in. It carries on too, so the suit stays out of the hold.
Some trips keep changing shape: train, then walk, then office. The 10X is the one bag that changes with them. It converts between a backpack, a messenger and a travel bag, expands in depth when an overnight becomes two and holds a 16-inch MacBook Pro in a padded sleeve. If you have been carrying two bags to cover all of it, the 10X replaces both.
To keep your hands free without looking like you packed for the gym, the Liberty backpack is structured leather that stands up on its own, with a padded sleeve, two zipped front pockets and pen slots inside. It is the hands-free answer to a briefcase, not a nylon tech pack.
A few related places to look:
- Shopping for a woman? The same bags come in a dedicated women's leather travel range, designed for her rather than recoloured from the men's line.
- Want more sizes and silhouettes than this selection shows? The full leather luggage collection carries them.
- Finishing a set? The wash bags and toiletry cases sit with the other leather wash bags.
Still weighing it up?
- Our guide to choosing a travel bag walks through the types and when each one makes sense.
- There is a companion guide for women covering the same ground.
- New to leather grades? Start with how full-grain differs from the lower grades and why it ages the way it does.
Inside, the travel bags are lined in cotton canvas, a natural weave, so nothing you pack sits against a synthetic lining. And because the leather is full-grain, the bag is meant to travel for years and keep looking better as it goes. Browse the range and pick the one that matches your trips.
How Is Von Baer Leather Different?
Not all leather is the same.
Since 2015, we at Von Baer have dedicated ourselves to high-quality real leather.
Here's a 30-second summary of how to choose a better leather product:
- Leather comes in different grades: full-grain, top-grain, and split/bonded - which represent how much of the original product is used (less product used = cheaper).
- Full-grain is the best grade of leather you can buy: exceptionally durable, developing an elegant patina, and having that beautiful real leather smell.
- Cheaper grades are less durable, age poorly, and don't have that authentic scent.
- Leather is processed through "tanning", which makes it durable and water-resistant.
- The two main methods for this are "vegetable-tanning" and "chrome-tanning".
- Chrome tanning uses harsh chemicals that are bad for the environment and produce a worse quality leather.
- Vegetable tanning is the best method, being more eco-friendly, and producing leather with a better patina and scent.
That's why here at Von Baer, we only use full-grain vegetable-tanned Italian leather, sourced from the finest tanneries across Tuscany, Italy.
It ages beautifully over time, developing a unique patina, making it more durable and luxurious than lower-quality leather.
It's also why we developed the leather standards trademark Cuoio Superiore (meaning "superior leather" in Italian).
